Gold Monarch vs Normal Monarch (Theory11)

With all the recent hype surrounding the White Monarchs, we figured many lucky people who managed to get their hands on the White Monarchs might now be on the hunt for the Gold Monarchs to form a complete set.


With the help of a kind sponsor for a Gold Monarch, we've decided to do a short write up on the differences between a Gold Monarch and a normal Monarch, just in case some of you are thinking of purchasing the decks off of eBay, but are unsure on how to differentiate them (without opening up the deck).


First off, before we begin, we would like to say that there is no foolproof method of accurately determining if it's a Gold Monarch or not without actually opening up the deck to take a look at the cards inside. That being said, these differences that we're about to mention have been cross referenced to multiple Gold and normal Monarchs and have been deemed to be one of, if not the most, effective methods.

On the left of the tuck case, where it says "Air-Cushion Finish. Made in the USA", with the lion logo on the top, the cellophane wrapping is actually "smooth" all the way down for the Gold Monarch. The normal Monarchs have their cellophane wrapping sealed up on this side of the case, and therefore, won't be "smooth".

The converse holds true as well, as the cellophane wrapping of the Gold Monarch will be sealed on the right edge of the tuck case, where it says "US Playing Card Company", which means that this edge of the normal Monarch would be "smooth".

This may be a more subjective difference, but the way the seals are attached onto the boxes look different on both decks as well. The seals on the normal Monarchs sink into the semi-circle groove of the opening flap, and do not appear as "evenly distributed" as the seal on the Gold Monarch.

Myth Debunked: Some of you may have learnt or heard that the Gold Monarch will have a gold lining on the top of the opening flap, while the normal Monarch doesn't. However, as the photo above confirms, the normal Monarchs do come with a gold lining too, and in our case, our Gold Monarch didn't. 


Lastly, this is the 100% foolproof method to check if your deck is the real deal:

Gold Monarch card backs

If you open your Gold Monarch deck, the card backs should have been printed with blue and gold ink, as shown above.

Normal Monarch card backs

The normal Monarchs on the other hand, would look like the photo above. The card backs would only have been printed in blue and white ink, not gold.

Steampunk (Theory11)

"At the edge of industry, therein lies Steampunk. 


Ripped from the pages of science fiction, the gears are turning, the steam is pumping, and the playing cards were finally born. It wasn't easy. The paper used on these tuck cases did NOT exist.


We made the bronze paper from scratch in order to perfectly print the ink that covers its surface in 19th century Victorian machinery.


The boldly stamped, debased elements cast shadows of illusion and create a perspective of depth and weight. The vents on top of the box invite you to take a look inside.


Opening the box, you will discover 52 pieces of machinery. The depth of the playing cards is fittingly unreal.


So unreal, it beckons you to stare at it's seemingly infinite array of detail. Designed by Alex Beltechi and constructed of 12 million 3D polygons. The jokers are morphed into jet turbines of steel. The Ace of Spades is a window of opportunity to witness the gears of intricate beauty and complexity.

Guardians v1 vs v2 (Theory11)

We received an email query from Sam Tan earlier on this week asking us about the difference between Guardians v1 and v2, and we wanted to share the answer we gave him with you as well!

To start off, there are three different versions of the Guardians - one made by USPCC and two by Theory11. We will be using those made by Theory11 for our illustration purposes today:

Front and Back: You can tell from the front and back of the tuck casing that the v2 is printed using a lighter metallic shade as compared to the v1. The v2's tuck case is also embossed, which means when you run your fingers over the surface, you can feel the words Bicycle and Guardians "pop-up" so to speak. 

v1 is on the top, and v2 is on the bottom

Sides: The second difference is on the right side of the tuck case. The v1 was printed in Ohio, while the v2 was printed in Kentucky, as stated clearly on the box. The other side simply shows "Air-Cushion Finish. Made in USA" for both versions.

Bottom: The last difference can be found on the bottom of both tuck cases. To begin with, the Theory11 logos are printed on opposite sides (right for v1 and left for v2). The logos are of different colors as well - the v1 has the trademark yellow circle with white 1s, while the v2 has taken on a total metallic emblem. The v1 also comes with a barcode, while the v2 says "Card design (c) 2011 theory11". Lastly, the metallic emblem of the v2 is also embossed as well.

USPCC vs Theory11 v2

We apologize that we are unable to provide any illustration for the comparison between the USPCC version and the Theory11 version. If anyone has both these versions and is willing to take some "comparison photos" for us, please do send them in! We'll be more than happy to have your photos posted up here, credits to you. 

Okay, moving on. The main differences lie in the tuck cases, while the finishes and designs of the cards remain the same.

Front: The USPCC version is printed using a darker shade of black as compared to the Theory11 v2, just like above. 

The USPCC version does not have any embossing, unlike the Theory11 v2. 

Just above the word Guardians on the front of the tuck case, the USPCC version says "Playing Cards - Cartes Á Jouer", while the Theory11 version only says "Rider Back".

Sides: On the left side, the USPCC version says "Air-Cushion Finish - Fini Coussin D'Air", while the Theory11 version says "Air-Cusion Finish - Made in USA". 

On the right side, the USPCC version says "Made in USA", while the Theory11 version says "The US Playing Card Co. Erlanger, KY 41018".

Top: The USPCC version says "Standard Face - Face Classique", while the Theory11 version simply states "Poker". Both seals are black in color.

Bottom:  The USPCC version does not have any Theory11 logo on it, nor any barcodes, but instead lists down all the trademark information. The bottom of the Theory11 version looks like the one in the photo above.

Back: Flipping the decks to their backs, we will see that the Theory11 version shows the actual back design of the cards, while the USPCC version does not.

Lastly, the USPCC version was also printed in Ohio, just like the Theory11 v1, while the v2 is printed in Kentucky. The Theory11 also comes with an additional Ad card inside.
